Yep, opening up the "why" can is like going down a Rabbit Hole. Maybe the Queen could believe 5 impossible things before breakfast, but I'm not that advanced.

Another good post, Tim, thanks. Like commenter Frank GL, I'm not following any leaders anywhere, and certainly not participating in violence (unless it's me defending myself, my family, and/or my property & possessions)! But I know what you mean, there are a heck of a lot of people playing follow-the-leader and ditching their own Inner BS Detectors for something.

I'm convinced that most of their seemingly insane machinations fall into one or more of these four categories (in frequency order).

1. Strategic (often blunderous) pawn maneuvering.

2. Psychological operations (mostly for demoralization and phased conditioning).

3. Sadistic amusement, whimsical evil villain role playing and cathartic punishment of the public for presenting an enormous, ever-present management headache.

4. Quasi-religious, new agey ritual abuse.
